He qualified from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, in 1985, passing the final MBBS examination with honours. He obtained the MS (Obs & Gyn) degree from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, in 1990. His overseas training was at the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, United Kingdom and the Royal Hospital, Chesterfield, United Kingdom.
He was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, United Kingdom, by examination in 1993 and was awarded the Fellowship in 2005. He obtained the membership of the Royal College of Physicians, Ireland, by examination in 1994. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in 2005.
He was trained in Assisted Reproduction at Nottingham University Assisted Reproduction unit (NUTURE) at the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, United Kingdom.
He was a member of the team performed first invitro Fertilization (IVF) by a Sri Lankan Team He performed the first IVF pregnancy using donor eggs in 2004.He has over 25 years’ experience in the field of Assisted Reproduction technology and has continuously contributed to the development of Assisted Reproduction in Sri Lanka. He has trained over six specialists in the field of ART.
He is a recipient of the National Award for Excellence in Multidisciplinary Team Effort in Research and Development in “Assisted Reproduction Technologies” awarded by the National Science Foundation, Sri Lanka, and the Young Gyneecologists Award (awarded by the Asia & Oceania Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecology).
Prof Athula Kaluarachchi delivered the D.A. Ranasinghe Oration in 2009 on the topic 30 Years after the Miracle Baby. Where are we? and Dr Siva Chinnathamby oration in 2018 on “Frozen Embryo Transfer.”
He was elected as the President of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in 2019.
He also served as the President of the Perinatal Society of Sri Lanka in 2015. He was appointed as the Honorary Medical Director of the Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka from 2010 – 2015.
He has over one hundred publications in peer-reviewed local and international journals, over eighty presentations at scientific meetings and has delivered over fifty invited guest lectures.
Prof Athula Kaluarachchi continues to serve as a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a special interest in Subfertility and Medical disorders in pregnancy.
